Ah, Love, but a Day

"Ah, Love, but a Day" by Amy Beach (1867-1944), performed by Ollie Johnson (soprano) with Dr. Anna Keiserman on piano. I have always had a deep love of music. As I have ventured into the world of music within college and reached new heights, however, I have had to confront what music really speaks to me within genres I had never previously even considered I could casually enjoy. To younger me, classical repertoire was always “homework”--it was never something to be loved, only something to be sung because it had to be. When presented with “Ah, Love, but a Day” by Amy Beach, however, I discovered a new aspect of classical repertoire that I had been missing for years, which was how fun this music could be. “Ah, Love” is extremely expressive, and while learning it was extremely technically difficult, it was all the more rewarding to learn when the final result was so dynamic. “Ah, Love” has certainly helped me gain new perspective that will aid me as I leave RVCC and enter 4-year college, where I hope to pursue Music Education. It is important to hold an appreciation of many genres in the career I would like to pursue, so I am prepared to aid my future students in any of the categories of music they wish to learn. I want to be the best resource I can be for future musicians, and gaining an appreciation for such a vital category of music is an important beginning.
