Description

I was born in El Salvador, San Salvador, and when I was twelve years old, my mom moved to the U.S. to give my older sister and me a better education. I enjoy reading things that enrich my mind and soul, I love nature and watching the sunrise/sunset, and I consider myself outgoing and friendly. I can’t lie and say I’m not ambitious, but that comes from wanting to make my family proud (as well as myself). I enjoy drawing and singing. Wherever my future takes me, I yearn to help others. I’d like to start a non-profit organization to help children in poverty countries get the education they deserve and use the skills I’ve learned throughout life to make someone else’s day a bit better. By submitting this project, I’d like to shed some light on a topic that I’ve familiarized myself with. Throughout middle school/high school, I noticed people who acted out against gender norms be bullied/pushed around for expressing themselves, and as someone who refrained from speaking up for herself because of a language barrier. I can only imagine how frustrating and painful it must be not to be accepted for who you are, so when I wrote this essay, I tried to keep in mind those people who didn’t stand up for themselves afraid of being harassed, for they didn’t conform to gender norms. I hope through my writing I reach someone out there struggling to show themselves to the world and let them know to be comfortable in being who they are.
